Dordogne Valley at Montvalent

Find the path of the river Dordogne in the Quercy of Lot department alternated with the Causse du Quercy, a smooth limestone plateau with open scenery on top of the causse. Not as polished as the scenery of the Dordogne department.
Rocamadour a famous tourist attraction of France with a beautiful small canyon of the Gorge de l'Ouysse and the beautiful Dordogne valley provide the scenery for a nice walking holiday.You'll see beautiful medieval villages like Souillac, Martel, Carennac and Rocamadour. And in Martel you can make a ride with the old train along the cliffs of the Dordogne.

Souillac - St. Sozy

Along the Dordogne you walk to St. Sozy "par la falaise" (under the overhanging cliffs). You pass a prehistoric shelter/cave.

St. Sozy - Martel

Going up the the hills of the valley you'll have the view of the picture above on the valley. In Martel the 7 towers and the nice market place of a medieval city. Click the banner for some very nice pictures of Martel

Martel - Carennac

Going down again to the Dordogne river you walk past the banks of the Dordogne through orchards with walnuts
In Carennac: Renaissance houses with sculpted windows and brown roofs are clustered around a Cluniac priory where French writer and prelate Fénelon once lived. Near the Romanesque church and its Cloister, the Château des Doyens invites you to discover the treasures of this Pays d’Art et d’Histoire-labeled region to which Carennac belongs.

Carennac - Rocamadour

Transfer to Gramat. Walk by the Gorges de l'Alzou to the quiet of your hotel with a pool in Rocamadour. Rocamadour the second pilgrims place of France. See the picture above and France travel guide for more details

Rocamadour - Lacave

Walk through the Gorges de l’Ouysse. After 9 km you can have a drink at the Moulin de Caugnaguet. The mill was built in the first half of the 14th Century and was run for a long time by Cistercian monks. It has 4 pairs of millstones, which mainly ground wheat and, later on, maize as well. It worked from 1350 until 1959 and is now protected as an Historic Monument. Alongside the crystal clear water of the Ouysse you come in Lacave (cave visit).

Rocamadour - Souillac

A walk or canoe trip back to Souillac. We recommend a transfer back to Souillac instead of the walk or else a canoe trip from St.Sozy to Souillac.

  • The nearest airport from UK to these walking tours is Brive (Ryanair) and Toulouse airport (Blagnac) from other countries.
  • Train Toulouse-Souillac direct connection of almost 2 hours.
  • From North America best is to fly into Paris Charles de Gaulle or to Toulouse Blagnac and take train at Gare d'Austerlitz (bikes allowed) to Souillac.

Charles de Gaulle    RER B  leaves every 5 minutes to Gare du Nord

Change at Gare du Nord    M5 (Metro line 5)  leaves every  5 minutes to Gare d'Austerlitz

At Gare du Nord you walk in 3 minutes to Metro line 5, direction Place d'Italie (Metro every 5 minutes or less).
14 minutes ride to Gare d'Austerlitz.
Walk 3 minutes to the platforms of Gare d'Austerlitz
Total 20 minutes from Gare du Nord to the platforms.


By train from Paris at Gare d'Austerlitz: leave at 7:09h, 9:09h; 9:39h or 13:56h. Arrival in Souillac after 4h30min.

From Souillac back to Paris: leave at 07:05 or 09:03 or 13:10. Arrival in Paris after 4h30min.
